WE CARE

AlArabi Plastic Factory is a responsible manufacturer. We believe that we all have a responsibility to both our environment and the future generations who will inhabit our planet in years to come.

We manufactures a huge range of eco-friendly plastics - made from oxo-biodegradable and recyclable materials - to minimise any environmental impact whilst still allowing you to get the job done.

Our product line of Reverte™ Oxo-Biodegradable technology which started through its environmental co-operation with WELLS Plastics Limited, the largest independent specialist additive masterbatch manufacturer in the UK, having been established more than 35 years. To change the concept of traditional plastic and make it environmentally friendly by providing all products of degradable polyethylene with Oxo-Biodegradable technology according to international standards and tests approved by Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization in order to preserve the environment of the State of Kuwait.

HOW ?

Very simply oxo-biodegradable plastic degrades and then biodegrades to H2O, CO2 & Biomass usually within 18 months in the open environment when exposed to the sunlight, heat , oxygen & microorganisms. What’s more, it does so without leaving any toxic residues or fragments of plastic behind (no micro plastics)

INTERNATIONAL STANDARD FOR
OXO-BIODEGRADATION

Oxo-biodegradable plastic can be tested according to “ASTM D 6954-18 for Plastics that Degrade in the Environment by a Combination of Oxidation and Biodegradation”

•Tier 1 - Degradability

•Tier 2 - Biodegradability

•Tier 3 - Eco-toxicity

GCC Standards for Oxo-biodegradation

•SASO 2879 now in place in KSA

•UAE S 5009 now in place in UAE

•SEC Bahrain - plastic regulations

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHY DO WE NEED OXO-BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC (OBD PLASTIC) ?

Because thousands of tons of plastic waste are getting into the world’s environment every day, and will remain there for decades. There is nowhere in the world where it possible to collect every piece of plastic for recycling or any other form of responsible disposal. OBD Plastic has been specifically tested and found biodegradable in the oceans.

WHAT IS REVERTE™ OXO-BIODEGRADABLE ADDITIVE ?

The term ‘Oxo-biodegradability’ is a hybridisation of two words; oxidation and biodegradability. It defines clearly a two step process initiated in this case by the ReverteTM additive degrading (breaking up) the polymer chain in order to make it available for biodegradability within the environment when a treated item has finished its useful life.

The oxidation phase reduces the polymer molecular weight and introduces oxygen into the structure. This process transforms the plastic from long strands to much smaller lengths. By reducing the chain length of the polymer the material loses its physical strength, making it brittle and non-plastic . The biodegradability aspect refers to the conversion of these lower molecular weight species by bacteria into biomass, CO2 and H2O.

IS THERE ANY TESTS FOR REVERTE™ OXO-BIODEGRADABLE ADDITIVE ?

Testing and product validation is a critical aspect of supporting an oxo-biodegradable product, and one which Wells Plastics ( AlArabi Plastic Factory supplier of oxo-biodegradable Reverte™ additive ) takes extremely seriously. Wells has a dedicated laboratory and staff who conduct quality control degradation profile testing in order to determine suitability of a formulation for a given application. In addition to this we have a wide range of bespoke manufactured test chambers in order to conduct these tests in a timely fashion.

OXO-DEGRADABLE VS OXO-BIODEGRADABLE DEFINITION

There is a lot of confusion in the terminology relating to degradable plastics, and it is necessary to bring clarity to this area.

“Oxo-degradation” is defined by CEN (the European Standards authority) in TR15351 as “degradation identified as resulting from oxidative cleavage of macromolecules.” This describes ordinary plastics, which abiotically degrade in the open environment, but do not become biodegradable except over a very long period of time.

“Oxo-biodegradation" is defined by CEN as “degradation resulting from oxidative and cell-mediated phenomena, either simultaneously or successively”. This describes OBP.

DO ANY COUNTRIES LEGISLATE IN FAVOUR OF OBD PLASTIC?

Yes. Many governments in the world have realised that oxo-biodegradable plastic offers a solution to plastic waste that escapes into the open environment and cannot realistically be collected. Ten countries have legislated to make oxo-biodegradable plastic mandatory, and they include Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain.
It is not now possible to export to these countries a wide range of plastic products or goods wrapped in plastic, unless the plastic is OBD Plastic.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

Very little, because the additive represents only 1% of the polymer, and because OBD Plastic products can be made with the same machines and workforce as ordinary plastic.

ISN’T IT BETTER TO RECYCLE THAN TO LET IT BIODEGRADE?

Yes, but if the plastic is not collected it cannot of course be recycled, so as a sort of ‘insurance policy’ OBD plastic degrades instead of accumulating in the environment. However, one of the benefits of oxo-biodegradable plastic is that it can be recycled as part of a normal plastic waste stream.

WHAT PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE IN OBD PLASTIC?

• Shopping bags which consumers use to take away their purchases from the shop or supermarkets.
• Garbage bags.
• Bread & Food bags.
• Frozen food bags.

• Plastic sheeting for a variety of applications in agriculture and more.

• Plastic film for wrapping applications.
• Shrink-wrap and pallet-wrap

and more....
